In 1974, someone filed a patent. US3951134. Apparatus and method for remotely monitoring and altering brain waves. The technology was real. Then it went quiet.

James Harlan knows what the inside of that silence feels like. He spent eight years wired into an experimental neural mesh, thoughts shared across light-years with a team of four minds working in concert. Problems turned beautiful when they held them together. Then came the months of unlearning how to tell his thoughts from theirs. At twenty-nine he signed the removal papers. He has not synced since.

That was a decade ago. Then a message arrives. Colonists at Arcadia Base on Mars are hearing voices. Some report euphoric music lifting them toward something they cannot name. Others describe commands. The Colonial Authority needs someone who knows the hardware from the inside. Someone who understands the difference between a system behaving as designed and one that has been turned against the people it was built to serve.

What Harlan finds sixty million miles from home is not a malfunction. The neural mesh connecting every settler at Arcadia Base is working exactly as intended. The question is who is holding the key.
